Acoustic Ceilings South Wales
Fix the echo, stop the overhearing. We work out which noise problem you actually have, then specify and install the ceiling that solves it.

Quick answer: An acoustic ceiling either absorbs sound to cut echo inside a room, or attenuates it to stop sound passing between rooms. They are different tile properties, and a tile that is excellent at one is often poor at the other. Interior Systems Wales zones the ceiling so each area gets the property it needs.
Most acoustic ceiling jobs go wrong at this point. Open-plan floors that ring, canteens that get louder as they fill and classrooms where children can’t hear the teacher all need absorption. Meeting rooms where the next room can hear you, or HR conversations that leak, need attenuation: dense tiles and a barrier in the void above the partition.

Absorbent tiles over open plan. Attenuation and barriers over private rooms.
One zoned specification instead of one expensive tile everywhere.

| What staff say | Acoustic problem | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| “It’s like working in a canteen” | Reverberation | Class A absorbent tiles, rafts or baffles |
| “The next meeting can hear us” | Sound over the partition head | Plenum barrier and high Dn,f,w tiles over the room |
| “I can’t hear callers” | Noise build-up across open plan | Absorbent ceiling plus wall panels in hotspots |
| “Our exposed ceiling echoes” | Hard soffit, no absorption | Free-hanging rafts and baffles |
| “The classroom rings” | Reverberation time above target | Class A tiles specified against the BB93 target |

The Acoustic Ratings That Matter
Brochures quote whichever number looks best. These are the ones to compare.
Sound absorption
Rated A to E under BS EN ISO 11654. Class A (αw 0.90+) is what you want for open plan, classrooms and canteens.
Room-to-room attenuation
How much sound the ceiling stops travelling through a shared void into the next room. Look for 35–45 dB+ for private rooms.
Reverberation time
Seconds for sound to die away. Offices typically aim for about 0.6–0.8 s, and classrooms usually 0.6 s or less.
For schools, targets come from BB93: acoustic design of schools. We specify against the target, not the brochure.

Acoustic Ceiling Solutions
Class A Absorbent Tiles
Stone wool or glass wool tiles on 24 mm or 15 mm grid. Often a weekend tile swap on your existing grid.
High-Attenuation Tiles
Dense mineral fibre or foil-backed tiles, with overlay pads where needed, over private rooms.
Plenum Barriers
Mineral wool curtains or plasterboard bulkheads above partition heads, sealed around services. The part most contractors miss.
Rafts and Baffles
Free-hanging absorbers for exposed-ceiling offices. You keep the look without the echo.
Acoustic MF Ceilings
Perforated plasterboard on metal furring with acoustic fleece, for a seamless finish in receptions and boardrooms.
Hygiene and Humidity Tiles
Washable, high-RH absorbers for canteens, surgeries, washrooms and pool areas.
Our Four-Step Process
- DiagnoseSite walk, interview about the complaints, inspection of the void and partition heads.
- Zone and specifyAbsorption where it’s loud, attenuation where it’s private, with products chosen on datasheet numbers.
- InstallEvenings, weekends or school holidays. Barriers sealed, services fire-stopped, grid levelled.
- Hand overDatasheets, maintenance notes and spare tiles left on site.
The whole sound path, one point of responsibility.
We also install acoustic partitions, so there’s no gap between trades for sound, or blame, to slip through.

Acoustic Ceilings FAQs
Can you just swap my existing tiles for acoustic ones?
Often, yes. If the grid is sound and level, Class A tiles are the quickest fix for an echoey room. They won’t stop sound passing between rooms, though; that needs attenuation tiles or a void barrier.
Why can I still hear the meeting room next door?
Usually the partition stops at the ceiling, leaving an open void. A plenum barrier and higher Dn,f,w tiles over the room normally solve it.
Are acoustic ceiling tiles fire rated?
Most mineral fibre and stone wool tiles are reaction-to-fire Class A1 or A2-s1,d0. Fire resistance is a separate property of the whole tested system. See ceiling tile types explained.
How long does an acoustic upgrade take?
A tile swap on a 200 m² floor can often be done over a weekend. New grid, barriers and lighting take longer and are phased around your hours.
Do I need an acoustic consultant?
For most offices, no. Schools and healthcare projects with formal BB93 or HTM 08-01 targets should involve an acoustician, and we work to their specification.
